A new chart for a single Valkey instance per application, replacing the
shared cluster-redis whose separation rests on one ACL file in one
1Password field - a construction in which every change touches six
applications and which cost a month of Paperless standstill.

Shape: StatefulSet with one replica, ClusterIP Service, no cluster mode,
no Ingress and no value to add one.

The password arrives as a finished configuration line ("requirepass
<secret>") in the 1Password field auth-conf, is mounted as a file and
included by the main configuration - never in argv, never in the
environment. The include is rendered last, so nothing in extraConfig can
override it. Because a misspelled or empty field would leave an open
server that looks perfectly healthy, an init container greps the mounted
file for the line and refuses to start the pod without it; it never
prints the file.

maxmemory is derived from the computed memory limit (maxmemoryFactor,
default 0.75) and a configured value above that limit aborts the render:
otherwise the kubelet's OOM kill decides what the eviction policy was
configured to decide. Persistence and eviction are documented as pairs -
queue (PVC + noeviction, the default) and cache (emptyDir +
allkeys-lru) - and the combination "no persistence + noeviction" carries
a warning in values.yaml and in NOTES.txt.

Probes: valkey-cli ping as an exec probe, authenticated through
VALKEYCLI_AUTH read out of the mounted file, with "-e" and an assertion
on the answer PONG. Without -e valkey-cli exits 0 on an error reply
(valkey 9.1.2, src/valkey-cli.c: the config.set_errcode branch in
cliReadReply), which would make the probe unable to fail.

Hardening: uid 999 / gid 1000 - the image's own valkey user - with
fsGroup matching, runAsNonRoot, readOnlyRootFilesystem, all capabilities
dropped and seccompProfile RuntimeDefault in the pod context so the init
container is covered too. /data is the only writable path.

NetworkPolicy on by default (first chart in this repo with one), with a
switch and a list of additional namespaces; values.yaml names that it is
only a boundary where the CNI enforces policies.

Wiring: publish-valkey.yml, the chart-name choice list, ci/valkey
fixtures for the persistent variant, a plain docker-versioning Renovate
block, README chart row.

calibre-web-automated 7.0.0, minecraft-server 6.0.0 and urlaubsverwaltung
10.0.0 each majors: an installation that renders today with an empty itemPath
stops rendering. searxng 1.0.6 is documentation only - its valkey reference is
correctly optional and stays gated by {{- if }}.

Every message names the values path. values.yaml now says per key why it is
required, reusing the wording the charts' NOTES.txt already carry. The
hand-rolled "cwaSecretRef IS UNSET" block in calibre-web-automated's NOTES.txt
is gone: after the guard the render aborts first and that block is
unreachable. minecraft-server's note stays true and now points at the guard.

No "required" array in the schemas, and README guideline 12 now says why. The
plan called for one; measuring it showed it could never fire: the key ships as
null, so it is present at validation time, and JSON Schema's required tests
presence, not null-ness. Making it fire means either dropping the null default
or narrowing the type to "string", and both turn helm lint --strict red on the
chart's own defaults. The schema therefore describes the key as required and
required() enforces it. The README bullet on how null reaches the schema was
also wrong in the case it was being applied to - a null chart default is not
coalesced away - and now distinguishes the three cases.

searxng: the claim "charts in this repo have no dependencies (README,
guideline 13)" in the valkey template, in values.yaml and twice in _helpers.tpl
has been false since #214 and cited the wrong guideline; dependencies are
admissible and are guideline 14. The same sentence survives in other charts'
helpers and needs its own round.

jklein 93fdb3eaea sure: new chart for the we-promise Sure app (1.0.0+up0.7.4)
One StatefulSet with two containers - the Puma web process and a Sidekiq
worker - sharing one ReadWriteOnce PVC at /rails/storage. That shared
volume is the reason they live in one pod: splitting them would need an
RWX volume. Only the web container migrates, because the image entrypoint
runs db:prepare solely for the './bin/rails server' command; the worker is
started through args: so the entrypoint (and its jemalloc preload) stays
in place and the two can never race.

Probes are chosen for what they prove: liveness and startup use Rails'
/up, which is a boot check and touches no database, while readiness uses
'/', which runs User.count through authenticate_user! in self-hosted mode
and therefore fails while Postgres is unreachable. The worker speaks no
HTTP, so all three of its probes ask sidekiqmon whether this pod still
holds a Sidekiq heartbeat in Redis.

Three OnePasswordItem CRs (app, database, redis), ingress.domain kept
required outside the Ingress because APP_DOMAIN and the WebAuthn relying
party read it, strict values.schema.json, CI fixtures with throwaway
Postgres 16 and Redis, and a Renovate manager on semver so the
-alpha/-rc/-hotfix channel and the moving tags are never selected.

jklein 4715d85b99 satisfactory: server.storage stays the documented exception (#39)
Publish Helm Chart with patched Application Version / publish-helm-chart (push) Successful in 6s
Publish Satisfactory Helm Chart / Publish Satisfactory Helm Chart (push) Successful in 7s
Walks back the one part of the previous commit that changed rendered output:
storage was pulled into the server fallback, so an erased size fell back to
20Gi instead of rendering a PVC without one.

values.schema.json had documented the opposite decision - "an erased value
yields an invalid PVC rather than a silently degraded workload" - and that is
someone's reasoned trade, not collateral of the nil-pointer bug next to it.
Overturning it inside a patch would have made this the only release where
valid values render differently, and it would have settled an open design
question in a PR nobody opened for that. It goes to #39 instead.

So storage is out of the defaults again and the schema note is restored
verbatim, extended only by where the exception is argued. values.yaml marks
it as the one key of the block that is deliberately not null-safe. The
README rule that had leaned on this example now says the thing that actually
holds: an exception is fine, an unmarked one is not.

Everything else stands - dev and server null-safe, the single-key findings on
the ports, formatNumber against exponential notation, 7.0.1.

Re-measured after the walk-back: rendered output against the chart defaults
and against a full override set is byte-identical to 7.0.0, NOTES.txt
included, and "--set server=null" now renders exactly the sizeless PVC that
"--set server.storage=null" rendered on 7.0.0.
2026-09-23 20:45:24 +00:00
jklein 5ff6e401c7 satisfactory: dev and server fall back instead of aborting (7.0.1)
--set dev=null aborted the render at .Values.dev.debug and --set server=null
at .Values.server.replicas, while the third block, game, has fallen back to
the chart defaults since 7.0.0. Half-safe is the worse state of the two:
whoever sees game=null work assumes server=null does too.

Both blocks now run through satisfactory.defaultedDict like game, via two new
helpers next to it. server.resources is deliberately NOT re-defaulted there -
it already runs through satisfactory.effectiveResources, which carries those
defaults and is null-safe on its own, and a second copy of limitFactor: 2 /
4Gi / 1 / 5Gi would be a third place for them to drift.

server is read in four files, not one, and the fourth is NOTES.txt, which
helm template never renders - a fix confined to the manifests would have
looked green and still aborted on a real helm install. All four go through
the helpers.

The single erased key was the quieter half of the bug and is fixed with it:
a nulled server.gamePort rendered "port:" and "nodePort:" empty into the
Service and an empty containerPort into the StatefulSet, and a nulled
server.storage a PVC asking for no size - manifests rejected by nothing until
the API server saw them. server.storage was documented in values.schema.json
as deliberately not null-safe; that reasoning does not survive the block-level
case, because it made "server: null" render a sizeless PVC instead of falling
back like everything else. The schema note is replaced rather than left lying.

Rendered output for valid values is unchanged: helm template against the
chart defaults and against a full override set is byte-identical to 7.0.0,
and so is NOTES.txt. Hence a patch bump, appVersion untouched.

The shared jlab-renovate-bot instance serves this repo and cluster-config,
and two repos behaving differently under one bot is a source of surprises
rather than of safety. This adopts cluster-config's configuration:
config:best-practices in extends, labels ["renovate"], no PR caps
(prHourlyLimit 0, prConcurrentLimit 100), separateMinorPatch, an explicit
dependencyDashboard, and global automerge with platformAutomerge.

Two of those choices were previously wrong here and are now right, because
the branch protection on main has caught up: a review requirement and
validate-charts as a required check are both active. platformAutomerge
therefore arms the PR on the forge and Gitea merges it when the check
passes AND the review exists - the review is the gate, which is what makes
automerging majors something other than unattended merging.

Comments that asserted the opposite are rewritten rather than left to rot:
the platformAutomerge: false comment ("not (yet) a required check on either
side"), the "Majors stay manual" rule, the README PR policy bullets and the
required-check paragraph, and the CLAUDE.md forge notes.

config:best-practices pulls in docker:pinDigests, which is switched off
again for custom.regex and helm-values: an appVersion: is a tag by
construction and has nowhere to put a digest. Kept deliberately:
minimumReleaseAge of three days on the routine updates (every merge here
publishes a chart), the ignorePaths and ci/** opt-outs, every per-chart
manager, the nginx and qbittorrent constraints, and postUpgradeTasks.

jklein 03bb454eb7 docs: make the wiki the knowledge base and its upkeep a required step
The wiki now carries one page per chart (prerequisites, installation, the
required 1Password fields, the complete values reference and the chart's
traps) plus the workflow, the pipelines, versioning, Renovate, the style
guide and the incidents behind each rule.

README points at it and keeps its own role: the overview for someone reading
the code, while anything an operator needs lives in the wiki. CLAUDE.md gains
the wiki edit as step 7 of the mandatory workflow, with a table of what
obliges an edit - and the one thing that does not, a plain app-version bump,
since Renovate automerges those and never touches the wiki.

Also corrects the patchmon row: the 2.x server serves frontend and /api/* from
one process, so the chart renders one Deployment plus an optional guacd
sidecar, not two Deployments.

The documentation still described a migration in progress, and the worst
line claimed the install-test "cannot run on Gitea at all" - true two
days ago, the opposite of true now, and exactly the sort of sentence
someone builds a wrong assumption on.

README and CLAUDE.md now state what holds: everything runs on Gitea,
github.com is a mirror with Actions and Renovate off, branch protection
with a signature requirement is active, and the tool is tea. The move
itself is not retold - that is Gitea #14.

"Where this repo lives" keeps its place but turns around: it is no
longer a list of what blocks us, it is what a Gitea runner does
differently from a GitHub one, with the measurements. Newly written
down because it holds permanently and stood nowhere: a matrix runs
concurrently in ONE job under ONE status context, so a required check
per chart is impossible and the context name carries the unexpanded
matrix expression; expected runtimes, so a later deviation is visible
as one, with the note that the difference to GitHub is structural - one
runner for both legs against a VM per leg - and not performance.

The six assumptions a GitHub runner had been meeting quietly are split
rather than listed. Five are environment (MTU, fs.inotify, missing
kubectl and envsubst, kubeconfig on 0.0.0.0): they fail loudly, say
nothing about our code, and are fixed on the node side. The sixth gets
its own block because it is the one that does say something about our
code - the hard-coded k3d cluster name was wrong on GitHub too and only
never showed there, because a VM per matrix leg meant two legs never saw
each other. A generous environment is no friend when you want to know
whether something is correct.

Two rules generalised out of this round, as rules rather than as a
story: a check that a broken system passes is worse than no check (with
the two vacuous forms that caused it), and green does not mean checked,
pointing at Gitea #24 as an open case of the same kind - explicitly not
claimed as solved.

Also fixes a hazard the move created: most #n in these files name closed
GitHub issues that were never migrated, while Gitea resolves a bare #n
against its own counter - #22 there is an unrelated throwaway pull
request, not the install-test issue the text means. Stated once at the
top instead of rewriting sixteen references into numbers that do not
exist.

The branch predates the Gitea move (#253) by 37 commits and both sides
touched the same two files. Merged rather than rebased, so the signed
commit of the original work stays intact, and resolved by combining
rather than choosing - both statements are true at once: the chart has
ten images now, and the repo lives on Gitea.

README.md, the one real conflict: this branch rewrote the freesailarr
image bullet from nine upstreams to ten, while main had grown a
minecraft-server bullet next to it that this branch never had. Kept
both - our "ten" wording and main's new bullet.

renovate.json5 merged cleanly, but "cleanly" is not "correctly", so the
result was read rather than trusted: the freesailarr exception now says
ten and gained the pointer to the mediathekarr digest block, while the
two things main added right beside it survived unchanged - the note that
the post-upgrade hook is allow-listed on the shared Gitea instance, and
the forge-neutral wording of the automerge rule. Nothing from before the
move brought "GitHub" back into a sentence that had been made neutral.

jklein c3889a66b6 Drop the Renovate workflow: the Gitea side already has a shared instance
A measurement overtook this part of the change. A shared `jlab-renovate-bot`
instance already runs on the Gitea side and already has this repository
enrolled - its first run there opened PRs for searxng and gotenberg plus the
dependency dashboard. A second runner in this repo would produce duplicate
PRs and two schedulers rewriting each other's branches, so
.github/workflows/renovate.yml is removed again.

Two things fall out of that run, and both were open risks:

- The instance reads our renovate.json5. searxng and gotenberg are
customManagers targets of ours - no built-in manager finds an appVersion
in a Chart.yaml - so the config is demonstrably in effect.

- allowedCommands is already granted there. The searxng PR's diff carries
  `version: 1.0.4+up2026.9.11.ffe96f8a6 -> 1.0.5+up2026.9.13.96479fff6`
next to the appVersion, and nothing but ci/renovate-bump-chart.sh writes
`version:`. Had that allow-list been missing, postUpgradeTasks would have
been skipped SILENTLY and every chart PR on Gitea would have been red on
the version check with nothing naming the cause.

With the workflow gone there is no container image to pin either; verified
by dry run that the ghcr.io/renovatebot/renovate dependency is no longer
extracted, while TRIVY_VERSION still is - that one belongs to the Trivy
replacement and stays.

README and CLAUDE.md now say Renovate runs on Gitea as an existing shared
instance and that no workflow belongs here, so the next reader who finds
none knows why instead of building one.

jklein a6c27ebef3 Prepare the Gitea move: measured CI deviations, self-hosted Renovate, issue migration script
Groundwork for #225, built on a throwaway pull request against the Gitea
instance rather than on assumptions. The move itself is not part of this
change - no Actions are switched off, no mirror is enabled, no branch
protection is touched.

What the probe run measured, and what follows from it:

- Which jobs need a Docker socket: only the install-test. Measured per
job - detect-changed-charts, build-chart, the quantity render and the
Trivy config scan all pass on `ubuntu-latest`, which on that instance
has no socket. The install-test dies there at "Create k3d cluster"
with "Cannot connect to the Docker daemon", an error naming k3d and
never the runner label. Its `runs-on` is now an expression: the label
`ubuntu-docker` on Gitea, `ubuntu-latest` on GitHub, because the
former does not exist there and a chart PR would otherwise queue
forever during the handover. Gitea evaluates it - the probe job was
  taken by the docker runner.

- The install-test still cannot pass on Gitea. That daemon is rootless
with "Cgroup Driver: none"; the k3s node restarts immediately with an
empty log because k3s needs cgroup delegation. The label is necessary
and not sufficient, and the fix is the maintainer's.

- aquasecurity/setup-trivy cannot be used on Gitea: it checks out
aquasecurity/trivy from github.com with `github.token`, which there is
a Gitea token, and ends on "could not read Username for
https://github.com". Replaced by the release tarball - one request,
same behaviour on both forges, green on the probe run.

Also in this change:

- .github/workflows/renovate.yml, Renovate in self-operation: a daily
scheduled run in the official container, inert on github.com via a
`github.server_url` guard. Every rule proved by dry run instead of
assumed - the pinned Renovate image is tracked by the built-in
  github-actions manager (44.80.0 -> 44.87.1, minor), TRIVY_VERSION is
still tracked after setup-trivy is gone (v0.72.0 -> v0.74.0, minor),
and `ubuntu-docker` is not extracted by the github-runners manager at
all, so nothing will quietly "correct" it.

- ci/migrate-issues-to-gitea.sh, runnable, with --dry-run, and NOT run.
Its header names what it cannot do: comment authorship, the #<n>
  references between issues, and attachments.

- CLAUDE.md and README.md on the new flow: which forge and which tool,
auto-merge on green checks in place of the merge queue Gitea does not
have, and the measured differences of the two CIs.

Refs #225 - deliberately no "Fixes": the move is not finished with this.

jklein 78d7020dab freesailarr: MediathekArr as the tenth container, off by default (3.1.0+up1.0.0)
MediathekArr fakes a Usenet indexer towards Prowlarr and a SABnzbd downloader
towards Sonarr/Radarr and fetches from the ARD and ZDF media libraries. Both
consumers already share gluetun's network namespace, so they reach it over
127.0.0.1 - no service, no DNS, no ingress detour. Purely additive: the flag
defaults to false and a default render is byte-identical to 3.0.5 (verified
against the previous chart for both the default values and the CI values).

The four things that fail silently without them:

- A START GATE on gluetun. MediathekArr fetches its ruleset once at start and
never retries; started before the tunnel it answers every Newznab search with
0 results while the container is up, Ready and quiet. Kubernetes cannot order
two regular containers and an initContainer would deadlock, so the wait sits
in front of the image entrypoint: poll gluetun's health server on
127.0.0.1:9999 and exec the entrypoint afterwards; on timeout the container
exits rather than starting blind, because a crash loop is visible and an empty
indexer is not. The startup probe budget (300s) deliberately outlasts the gate
  (180s).
- incomplete/ AND complete/ ON THE SHARED DOWNLOADS CLAIM, not in an emptyDir.
An emptyDir counts against the container's ephemeral-storage limit, and one
large download would have the kubelet evict the whole pod with all ten
containers - the trap ytdlp-web-player documents.
- THE COMPLETE PATH SONARR SEES. The claim is mounted at /downloads exactly as
sonarr/radarr mount it, and the chart sets DOWNLOAD_COMPLETE_PATH itself, so
the SABnzbd complete_dir it reports is the same absolute path on both sides.
- TWO PORTS: 5007 (SABnzbd role and UI, primary) and 5008 (Newznab role for
Prowlarr), both declared to gluetun's firewall and both on one Service. The
SABnzbd API is at /download/api - /api on 5007 answers with a misleading
  Newznab validation error.

Further details:

- Image pinned by digest (tag + digest): "latest" is a 2024 build, "beta"
  moves. Single-arch linux/amd64. The built-in helm-values manager cannot
follow that pair, so renovate.json5 gets the chart's first customManagers
block; verified by dry-run with two fixtures, since a matching and a broken
rule look identical while the pin is current.
- Hardened as measured: non-root, uid/gid from puid/pgid,
readOnlyRootFilesystem: true, all capabilities dropped, no PUID/PGID.
- Probes on measured 200 endpoints (there is no health endpoint): readiness and
startup on /download/, liveness as an exec covering BOTH ports, because one
container runs two processes and a wedged Newznab half is exactly what makes
  searches come back empty.
- No ingress by default: the UI links its assets with root-absolute paths, so it
can only be served at the root of a host; on the shared domain that root
belongs to seerr. A sub-path fails the render instead of producing a broken
  UI.
- values.yaml and NOTES.txt document the geo MARKER PROCEDURE (not a table of
series), the escape route of a German exit and its price for the whole stack,
the fail_message: null trap, and the HLS question as an open question.
- CI: mediathekarr enabled in ci/freesailarr/test-values.yaml, install timeout
raised to 1200s for the extra image and the gate.

Fixes #245

jklein 5a4eeefd0e docs: the excluded-chart signal, and minecraft-server's image-tag exception
Two documentation gaps, both about a reader drawing the wrong conclusion.

The install-test section said nothing about what an exclusion looks like in a PR's check list. It now says that an excluded chart gets no job at all rather than a green tick, that the detect job names it with its documented reason in the summary, that the mandatory justification is what makes a line an exclusion in the first place, and why the per-chart "if" that would produce a visible Skipped is not available (#231).

Section 3 of the style guidelines lists the charts that deviate from "the main image tag comes from appVersion" so that nobody mistakes a deviation for a mistake and tidies it away. minecraft-server has been the only chart with an overridable tag since #158 and was missing from that list: the line says that image.tagOverride exists, why (only the newest Java line is maintained, so the line becomes a decision at rollout time instead of a property of the chart), and that the chart checks the pairing of effective tag and minecraft.version itself and fails the render on a mismatch (#232).
2026-09-04 16:58:22 +02:00
jklein 9c0039685b minecraft-server: an overridable image tag and a Java-line guard (5.0.0+up2026.8.2.java25)
Only the newest Java line is maintained from now on. Publishing the chart once
per line out of one directory is what made the lines drift apart (#158): a
change reached whichever line happened to lie in the directory. java8 and java17
stay published as frozen artifacts at 4.0.0, java21 at 4.1.0, and none of them
gets another chart change.

Running an older JVM is now a decision at rollout time instead of a chart
version: image.tagOverride replaces the tag that otherwise comes from
appVersion. It is not called image.tag because it decouples the running image
from the chart version, and it is deliberately outside Renovate's reach -
renovate.json5 keeps tracking appVersion only.

The pairing of tag and minecraft.version is now checked at render time and fails
with both values named, the line each one belongs to, and where the tag came
from. Until now nothing checked it: a mismatch installed silently and only the
container failed afterwards. The boundaries are Mojang's, swept over all 102
releases of the piston-meta manifest (javaVersion.majorVersion): up to 1.16.5
Java 8, 1.17-1.17.1 Java 16, 1.18-1.20.4 Java 17, 1.20.5-1.21.11 Java 21, 26.1
and later Java 25. The 1.17 line was the one gap the chart's own notes did not
cover.

Two cases pass unchecked on purpose, documented in values.yaml and NOTES.txt: a
tag without a recognizable java<N> part, and a minecraft.version that is not a
plain numeric x[.y[.z]]. A guard that rejects what it does not understand gets
worked around instead of respected.

Major, because an installation that already runs a mismatched pair stops
rendering. It does not run today either - it now fails earlier and visibly.

jklein 485f4fa52b satisfactory: game.enableSeasonalEvents says what it does (7.0.0+upv1.9.10)
game.seasonalEvents was handed to the container unchanged, into the image's
DISABLESEASONALEVENTS. Its default true therefore wrote
DISABLESEASONALEVENTS=true: the seasonal events were OFF in every install
this chart has ever produced, while values.schema.json described the very
same key as "true means events are enabled" (#215).

Of the two ways out, this is the loud one. Inverting the template under the
old key would have flipped the behaviour of every existing release in
silence - the same class of mistake that created the issue. Renaming the key
cannot be missed: game.seasonalEvents no longer exists, additionalProperties
is false on the game block, and a values file that still carries it fails
schema validation on upgrade instead of quietly meaning the opposite.

The new key is positive (enableSeasonalEvents) to avoid a double negative,
so the chart negates it on the way into the env var. Go's "not" cannot do
that: it reads every non-empty string as true, and the schema deliberately
accepts the string form of booleans, so "false" would have flipped the wrong
way. The helper compares explicitly and fails on anything that is neither
true nor false rather than filing it under "off".

The default is enableSeasonalEvents: false, which renders the
DISABLESEASONALEVENTS this chart has always rendered. At chart defaults the
6.1.0 and 7.0.0 manifests are identical, so upgrading alone moves no server;
switching the events on is now a deliberate act with a key that means it.

Separate finding from the same issue, fixed here because it lives in the
block being touched: "--set game=null" - or a leftover "game:" whose
sub-keys were deleted - aborted the render with a nil pointer at
.Values.game.maxPlayers. The game block never got the null-safe treatment of
#99 that probes, security contexts and resources have. It now falls back to
the documented defaults, and the schema accepts the null accordingly. The
same gap remains in the dev and server blocks; it is reported, not fixed
here.

Major bump: a values key is removed, and the schema rejects it.

jklein f761767630 urlaubsverwaltung: correct the env-collision claim, answer the recovery question
The chart told operators that adding a duplicate env name to an installed
release makes the next upgrade fail in the API server, quoting "The order in
patch list ... doesn't match $setElementOrder list". Measured against helm
3.19.0 and Kubernetes 1.35, it does not fail: the upgrade succeeds, helm prints
"Release has been upgraded", and Kubernetes merges the env list by name, so the
duplicate pair collapses to the chart's own entry and the operator's override is
discarded without a word. At install time the same values behave differently -
both entries reach the pod, the later one wins, and the API server says so with
"hides previous definition of ..., which may be dropped when using apply".

The advice that followed from the old claim survives - such a switch only takes
at install time - but the stated reason was wrong in the dangerous direction. A
reader who expects a loud failure treats a green upgrade as proof the override
took effect, and green is exactly what a silently dropped override looks like.
The text now names the real failure mode and tells the reader to read the value
back off the Deployment. README carries the same correction, because every chart
in this repo offers the same additive env block.

Also records what the earlier measurement left open. With the database scaled
back up the pod returns to Ready on its own after about five seconds, restart
count still 0, so leaving the liveness group untouched costs no manual recovery.
And the limit of that signal belongs next to it: the db indicator validates a
connection, not the schema, so a database that came back empty still put the pod
back to Ready with /actuator/health at 200.
2026-09-02 13:22:58 +02:00
jklein f8acdfdfe1 urlaubsverwaltung: readiness must see the database, health must not lie (9.0.0+up6.7.0)
MANAGEMENT_ENDPOINT_HEALTH_GROUP_READINESS_INCLUDE=readinessState,db puts the datasource into Spring Boot's readiness group, which shipped with readinessState alone: a total database outage left the pod 1/1 Ready while every request failed. Naming the members replaces the default, so readinessState is repeated. The liveness group stays untouched on purpose, because an outage has to keep traffic away rather than add a crash loop to it.

MANAGEMENT_HEALTH_MAIL_ENABLED=false removes the mail indicator, which pinned the aggregate /actuator/health at 503 for the whole life of a healthy release, because the chart's mail wiring points at localhost:1025 where nothing listens. values.yaml and NOTES.txt document what that costs and when it has to be switched back on.

jklein 01f804a43a ci: publish charts to a classic index-based Helm registry
The publish step no longer speaks OCI. "helm registry login", "helm push"
and "helm registry logout" are replaced by a single HTTP POST of the
packaged .tgz to <charts-url>/api/charts, with Basic auth per request.

Credentials and the target URL come from a new 1Password item
op://GitHub-Actions/jlab-registry-access (username, password, charts-url).
The old item is left untouched, so a revert of this commit restores the
previous pipeline without any further work. No registry address enters
the repository.

The three properties of the old step survive:

- values are read via steps.<id>.outputs.* into the step's own env block
and used as quoted shell variables, each guarded with ":?"
- credentials stay out of argv: "curl --config -" instead of "--user"
- a failed upload fails the job: "--fail-with-body", because curl exits 0
on HTTP 401/403/409 without it and the publish would go green with
  nothing uploaded

The "<chart>-*.tgz" glob is replaced by the file name built from the
chart name and the version already read from Chart.yaml; --upload-file
takes exactly one file. Two small additions fall out of measuring the
new step: the registry host is masked, because a curl connection error
prints only "<host>:<port>" and the mask on the full URL does not cover
that, and whitespace in the credentials is rejected up front, because an
unquoted curl config value ends at the first space.

No chart is touched and no chart version is bumped.

jklein bfa72181eb minecraft-server: move to the java25 line (4.1.0+up2026.8.2.java25)
Minecraft 26.2 requires Java 25, so the chart's default minecraft.version can
only be raised on a java25 image. appVersion becomes 2026.8.2-java25 - the same
dated upstream release the java21 line ships, so the only variables that change
are the JVM and the Minecraft version.

The chart version stays at 4.1.0: the Java lines are siblings of one chart
generation, not successors, and are told apart by the +up suffix.

The Java boundaries in the values.yaml / NOTES.txt comments are read off
Mojang's version manifest (javaVersion.majorVersion per release), not
estimated: 1.21.11 is the last release asking for Java 21, every release from
26.1 on asks for Java 25.

jklein 6b0d8c9232 ytdlp-web-player: new chart with an optional oauth2-proxy subchart (1.0.0+upv1.2.0)
Deploys matszwe02/ytdlp_web_player, a Flask app that fetches videos with
yt-dlp, transcodes them with ffmpeg and serves them as HLS. It ships no
authentication of any kind, so the chart carries a preconfigured oauth2-proxy
as an optional subchart, in the data path in front of the app.

This is the first chart in the repo with a dependency, so the rule "charts
have no dependencies" falls here. It is replaced in CLAUDE.md and README.md by
a bar: a dependency has to be optional and off by default, upstream's chart is
consumed as it comes (documented where it falls short of our conventions,
never patched), and the price is written down - above all that a subchart is
invisible to everything downstream watching Helm release versions, so a new
proxy release only reaches a cluster when this chart is republished.

CI learns the dependency in five places, not the three the plan expected:
helm lint, package, template and install all exit 1 while charts/ is unfilled,
so ci/helm-dependencies.sh runs before lint and package in validate-charts.yml,
before package in publish-helm-chart.yml, and inside run-install-test.sh,
run-trivy-config.sh and run-quantity-render-test.sh - the last of which renders
every chart on every PR and would have gone red first.

Notable chart decisions, each measured rather than assumed:

- The image has no USER and runs as root by default, but not by necessity: it
runs under an arbitrary uid with readOnlyRootFilesystem and the full
hardening baseline. Only the pinned uid is a deviation, and it is documented.
- Two emptyDirs, each justified separately. /data holds the video cache
(DATA_PATH). /tmp is NOT mounted - measured across metadata extraction, HLS
transcoding, sprite generation and audio extraction, the image never writes
there. What it does write is $HOME/.cache, so /cache is mounted with HOME and
XDG_CACHE_HOME pointed at it; without it yt-dlp re-downloads its JavaScript
challenge-solver from github.com on every extraction.
- The proxy is wired through config.configFile, the only value the subchart
passes through tpl - config.upstreams is emitted with toJson and would carry
  a literal {{ .Release.Name }} into the manifest.
- Rendering aborts when this chart's Ingress and the proxy's claim the same
host: ingress-nginx rejects the second one and a Fleet bundle then sits in
  ErrApplied until forceSyncGeneration is bumped.

JK-Helper [BOT] 1dbe948005 Merge branch 'main' into ci/quantity-render-test 2026-08-29 01:38:14 +02:00
jklein 17ae06b58f README: every chart ships a NOTES.txt, plus two stale chart-table facts
The NOTES.txt bullet still said the file was "planned (#43)" and named nine
charts as the ones shipping one. Both halves are now wrong: 23 of 23 charts
carry a templates/NOTES.txt, template-chart included. The count was also
wrong when it was written — the very commit that raised it to "nine" added
template-chart/templates/NOTES.txt, making it ten, and the enumeration was
never maintained. Replaced with a statement and no list, so the next new
chart cannot make it stale again; the quality bar the programme settled on
(rendered URL, which fields the 1Password item must carry, the options
actually active, the chart's traps — conditional on the values really set)
is kept and now reads as a requirement for new charts.

Two further statements corrected against origin/main:

- The chart table listed 22 of 23 charts; `bentopdf` was missing entirely
although it ships (bentopdf/Chart.yaml, 1.0.1+up2.8.7) and has CI fixtures.
- The homeassistant row advertised "has NOTES.txt and Helm tests". The
NOTES.txt half stopped being a distinguishing property once every chart
got one. The Helm tests half holds and is now stated as what it is:
homeassistant/templates/tests/test-connection.yaml is the only such file
  in the repo.

Documentation only — no chart directory, no version bump, no publish.

jklein 148e15a1f6 ci: guard resource quantities against exponential notation
Adds ci/run-quantity-render-test.sh and a validate-charts job that runs it
over every chart on every PR.

The bug behind #157 has a loud and a silent half. Loud: a bare integer request
of 1048576 is reformatted by printf "%v" to "1.048576e+06", the helper rejects
the suffix it produced itself and the render aborts. Silent: with a fractional
limitFactor the *product* is reformatted after the suffix check, the render
succeeds, and the manifest carries memory: "1.4999985e+06" - rejected by
nothing until the API server sees it at apply time.

So the test renders each chart twice and, for the silent case, searches the
rendered text rather than the exit code. It runs over all charts, not the
changed ones: the resources helper is copied into every chart's _helpers.tpl,
so the regression arrives by copy, in a PR whose diff shows a new chart and not
the bug inside it. The resources paths come from values.schema.json (JSON, so
python3 reads it without pyyaml), which also means a new chart is enrolled
automatically and there is no list to maintain.

Charts that pin every computable limit in their fallback defaults never reach
the helper (gotenberg, rss-bridge). They are reported as "not exercised"
instead of counted as passing.

jklein 0217422179 template-chart: NOTES.txt and the naked-integer render fix (4.1.0+upxxx)
Two changes to the reference implementation, both of which every chart copied from it inherits.

Render fix (part of #157): multiplyQuantity turned its input into a string with printf "%v". The null-safe fallback helpers pass values through fromYaml, which parses every number as float64, and Go's "%v" switches float64 to exponential notation from about 1e6 upwards - so a bare byte count like 1048576 arrived as "1.048576e+06" and the suffix check aborted the render. A new xxx.formatNumber helper forces plain decimal notation on both the input and the non-integer product; strings like "512Mi" pass through untouched. This is the canonical fix agreed for the issue, taken over verbatim, because multiplyQuantity is the same copy in every chart and a private variant would create drift instead of a solution. The toYaml/fromYaml round-trip is deliberately not touched: it is not the cause.

NOTES.txt (part of #43): the scaffold now carries the reference NOTES.txt - a placeholder-carrying template, not finished prose. It renders the access URL from ingress.domain (no real domain anywhere), names which fields the 1Password item must carry, and prints the chart's traps: the placeholder image, the fact that both a Deployment and a StatefulSet render, and that no checksum/secret-ref means a secret change restarts nothing here. Output is conditional on the values actually set.

appVersion unchanged; minor bump because both changes are additive.

jklein 46942db53a searxng: new chart (1.0.0+up2026.8.22.9fea41204)
SearXNG as a stateless Deployment plus a settings ConfigMap, with the four CI
steps a new chart needs: publish workflow, change-app-version choice list,
ci/searxng/ fixtures and a renovate.json5 block.

Three points where the chart is not a cyberchef with another name:

* The image entrypoint writes settings.yml into /etc/searxng only when the
file is missing. The chart always mounts one by subPath, so the copy and
the random-secret sed never run and the container needs no write access
there - which is what allows readOnlyRootFilesystem: true.
* The signing key is a required OnePasswordItem, not a ConfigMap key. It
signs the settings cookie and the image-proxy URLs, and the entrypoint's
self-generating fallback cannot fire here, so without it the instance would
run on the literal "ultrasecretkey" - which webapp.py refuses with exit 1.
* All three probes use /healthz, the only path the bot detection lets through
unconditionally. Measured: with the limiter active, "/" answers 429 while
  /healthz still answers 200.

ingress.domain is read a second time outside the Ingress template, for
SEARXNG_BASE_URL, and carries its own required() there - so it stays
mandatory with the Ingress switched off.

The Renovate versioning regex deviates from the plan on the issue and matches
the commit hash WITHOUT capturing it. Renovate parses a "build" group with
Number.parseInt, so a hash becomes the digits leading it; measured on
renovate 41.173.1 and 44.48.0, the planned form reports an image pushed
earlier the same day as an update to a newer one. Reasoning in the block and
in README.

jklein 69a280399c ci: run the freesailarr install-test for real instead of skipping it
freesailarr was excluded from the install-test because gluetun never becomes
healthy without a real Wireguard key and no app container behind its kill
switch can become Ready. The green "Install-test freesailarr pass" was a
25-second SKIP on the most complex chart in the repo - a signal that proved
nothing.

With a CI-only Mullvad key in 1Password the reason is gone:

- ci/run-install-test.sh learns a general rule: ci/<chart>/fixtures.env.yaml is
rendered with envsubst before it is applied, restricted to the variable names
a chart declares in REQUIRED_ENV. A missing or empty declared variable fails
the run loudly and names the variable - it never skips the chart.
- The install-test job loads the key from 1Password Connect for freesailarr
only, following the pattern publish-helm-chart.yml documents: values via
steps.<id>.outputs.*, mapped into the step's own env, quoted, with ":?"
guards that name the missing op:// field before a cluster is created.
- Fixtures for freesailarr: three media claims, the gluetun secret template
with variable names only, firewallOutboundSubnets so the kill switch does not
block cluster DNS, and INSTALL_TIMEOUT=900 for nine containers.

freesailarr/Chart.yaml goes 3.0.0+up1.0.0 -> 3.0.1+up1.0.0. That bump is
deliberately empty of content: the install-test matrix follows changed chart
directories, and without it this PR could not run the test it adds.

jklein fc768efaf5 freesailarr: shared domain with sub-paths, qBittorrent save path (3.0.0+up1.0.0)
Adds a second, optional ingress shape and fixes the download target of
qBittorrent. The existing per-app-host shape stays the default and renders
unchanged.

Shared domain (#167)

Setting ingress.host moves every app without a host of its own into one
Ingress object with one path each (<app>.ingress.path, default /<app>), one
TLS secret and therefore one DNS name and one certificate for the whole
stack. A per-app host always wins and keeps its own object, so mixed
operation needs no extra values.

The apps differ in what they can do under a sub-path, and the chart follows
that rather than pretending they are alike:

  - radarr, sonarr, prowlarr get <APP>__SERVER__URLBASE from the chart, but
only when their own env block does not already carry the variable.
  - bazarr has no environment variable for its base path and stays one
documented manual step (Settings -> General -> Base URL).
  - qbittorrent has no base path at all and renders a second object on the
same host with a prefix-stripping rewrite. It repeats the same TLS secret
name and deliberately omits the cert-manager annotation, so both objects
state their own TLS while only one certificate is requested.
  - seerr has no base path either and cannot be rewritten, so it is pinned to
"/" and a fail refuses any other path. A second fail refuses two apps
    claiming the same path.

qBittorrent save path (#166)

Without Session\DefaultSavePath qBittorrent writes to its built-in default
/config/Downloads - the 1Gi config volume. It fills within minutes, every
torrent goes to "errored" and qBittorrent can no longer write its own
metadata to BT_backup, so a restart in that state costs the torrent list.

The init container (renamed qbittorrent-config-interface ->
qbittorrent-config-seed, since it no longer only sets the interface) now
seeds qbittorrent.savePath, default /downloads. Unlike the interface binding
it is inserted ONLY when the key is absent and never replaced: a path changed
in the WebUI is a legitimate operator decision and must survive a restart.

This is the reason for the major bump: an installation that never set the
path writes somewhere else after the upgrade.

Documentation

NOTES.txt and the media block in values.yaml now spell out why a shared claim
with three subPaths does not produce hardlinks: the kernel compares the
vfsmount in do_linkat, not the superblock, so two bind mounts of one
filesystem are EXDEV - while stat reports the same device number on both
sides and suggests the opposite. The layout that would work (one claim, one
mount, categories as sub-directories) is named as a possibility; the chart
cannot express it today.

README.md gains the shared domain as the second admissible ingress shape of
the style guideline.

jklein d9c7878afe README: bound the icon exception to its criterion
The previous wording named freesailarr as a documented exception but closed on
"the field is omitted, lint still exits 0", which reads as a general licence to
drop the icon. The rule is now stated with its criterion and its reach: the
exception exists because the chart has no single upstream whose logo the icon
could be, it is the only chart in the repo without one, and a single-upstream
chart missing an icon is a missing icon rather than an exception.

jklein a37588c2fe freesailarr: schema, null-safe fallbacks, seccompProfile, NOTES.txt
Retrofits the repo-wide groundwork that #59 deliberately left out to keep the
reviewed scope. Chart 2.0.0+up1.0.0 - a major, because seccompProfile changes
runtime behaviour; appVersion stays the freely chosen marker 1.0.0.

values.schema.json (#68). The largest schema in the repo: nine app blocks with
probes, resources, security contexts, env and image. additionalProperties is
false on every chart-owned level; the objects that go verbatim into the pod
spec stay open. It rejects a mistyped app name, a mistyped key at any depth and
ingress.domain - the key #59 removed, which until now would have been accepted
in silence.

Null safety (#99), both halves, because they cover different cases. The
defaultedDict helper catches a key WITH a chart default, where Helm's
coalescing deletes the null before the schema ever sees it; the widened
["object","null"] types catch a key WITHOUT one, where the null survives into
validation. Measured on the old chart: radarr.securityContext: null rendered
"securityContext: null" - the whole hardening gone - and
securityContext.capabilities: null dropped the capability block entirely, so
the container kept every default capability instead of dropping ALL. Both
render green.

The fallback table reproduces THIS chart's defaults including its deviations:
the five linuxserver.io containers keep runAsNonRoot unset and a writable root
filesystem so their s6 init can drop to PUID/PGID, flaresolverr keeps its
numerically pinned uid, gluetun keeps NET_ADMIN, and recyclarr keeps its exec
probes. Restoring the "clean" standard there would put the linuxserver
containers back on the image's uid 911 - the failure calibre-web-automated hit.
The sync between table and values.yaml is not left to discipline: rendering
with every block of the silent class explicitly set to null is byte-identical
to rendering the defaults, which is how a drift shows up.

seccompProfile RuntimeDefault (#84) in the pod context, so it covers the init
container too. Trivy's KSV-0104 drops from ten findings to none.

NOTES.txt (#43) covering what actually bites: the pod is not Ready until the
tunnel is up, the two fields the 1Password item needs, the warning when
firewallOutboundSubnets is unset, the immutable volumeClaimTemplates, and the
measured fact that imports do not hardlink across the media categories.

Also, from point 5 of the plan: checksum/config does not apply - the chart has
no ConfigMap - but checksum/secret-ref does, and was missing. Helm never sees
the secret's contents, yet it does see which op:// item the OnePasswordItem
points at, so repointing secrets.gluetunSecretRef now restarts the pod instead
of leaving the old credentials running.

README: the #43 status line was stale (it still claimed only homeassistant
ships NOTES.txt), and the mandatory-icon rule now records freesailarr as a
documented exception - #59 dropped the icon and did not amend the rule.

jklein f5da9ce126 renovate: exclude the two legacy qbittorrent tags
linuxserver/qbittorrent still carries 14.3.9 and 20.04.1 from earlier tagging
schemes. Docker versioning sorts both above every real release, so Renovate
offers them as major updates - PRs #152 and #153 are exactly those, and they
would have to be closed by hand again after every lookup.

They cost more than the noise. Renovate fills the major bucket once, so while a
stray occupies it the genuine major is never offered at all: measured from
currentValue 4.6.4, the unconstrained lookup returns 4.6.7 and 20.04.1, and
never mentions 5.2.3.

Both are excluded by name. A bound such as "<10" would reject a genuine major
sooner or later, whereas two finished artifacts cannot grow and so cannot mask
a release that does not exist yet. A shape-based filter was tried first and
measured out: requiring a non-padded minor drops 20.04.1 and simply promotes
14.3.9 into its place.

Verified with renovate 44.41.0 (dry-run=lookup) against the live registry:
currentValue 5.2.1 -> [5.2.3 (patch)], both strays gone
  currentValue 4.6.4 -> [4.6.7 (patch), 5.2.3 (major)]
The second fixture is the guard the nginx rule taught us to run - it proves the
filter does not silently empty the update list. A full run over the real
repository with the real config confirms it in place: qbittorrent offers 5.2.3
only, nginx is unchanged, and no docker dependency carries a skipReason or a
warning.

jklein 09fe3c2be6 Decouple appVersion from gluetun in wording and value
The previous commit moved every image tag into values.yaml but left appVersion
described as a marker "for the gluetun line", to be updated together with
gluetun.image.tag. That still asserts a coupling the chart does not have, and
the value v3.41.1 confirmed it at a glance.

appVersion is now 1.0.0 (version 1.0.0+up1.0.0): the chart's own version
marker, freely chosen and tied to no upstream. The texts say that instead of
the old coupling in Chart.yaml, values.yaml and the two README passages. The
README's remaining true statement is kept but generalized - renovate-bump-chart
bumps the patch level on an unchanged appVersion for all nine images alike,
which is not a gluetun special case.

Also corrected on the way: the busybox init image comment claimed it was
"pinned independently of appVersion (which tracks gluetun)". Neither half holds
any more - appVersion tracks nothing, and every image in the chart is pinned
the same way.

No functional change: the rendered gluetun image is qmcgaw/gluetun:v3.41.1
before and after.
2026-08-24 15:10:14 +02:00
jklein af5f9ed79b Pin gluetun in values too, so Renovate proposes it there
The chart bundles nine independently versioned upstreams, and eight of them
were already pinned in values.yaml while only gluetun took its tag from
appVersion. That split had no upside: it made gluetun the one image Renovate
could not reach through the built-in helm-values manager, and it implied a
"main app" the stack does not have.

gluetun now carries gluetun.image.repository/tag like every other image, and
the StatefulSet renders it from there. No tag comes from appVersion any more.
Renovate picks all nine up through helm-values - the manager the repo already
relies on for sidecar images - and ci/renovate-bump-chart.sh bumps the chart
version with each update.

Consequences, all documented where they bite:
- renovate.json5 deliberately gets no app-version block for this chart. One
would either duplicate the helm-values updates or rewrite an appVersion that
selects no image. The absence is commented so it does not read as an
  oversight.
- freesailarr leaves the change-app-version.yml choice list. That workflow
rewrites appVersion and republishes, which for this chart would change no
  deployed image at all.
- appVersion becomes a hand-maintained marker for the gluetun line. Since
renovate-bump-chart.sh bumps the patch level on an unchanged appVersion, a
gluetun update has to be paired with a hand edit of appVersion, or the +up
suffix stops describing what the chart deploys. Noted in Chart.yaml,
  values.yaml and README.

jklein 0fb6c30466 publish: read registry credentials from step outputs and validate them
Two defects kept the publish broken after the load-secrets-action v5 bump
in #140.

v5 no longer exports the loaded values as environment variables for later
steps the way v4 did; only the step outputs carry them. Every
"${{ env.JK_CR_* }}" reference therefore resolved to an empty string from
that bump on, and nothing reported it - the loading step logs "Populating
variable" and stays green either way. #149 moved three of the four
references to steps.<id>.outputs but left "-u ${{ env.JK_CR_USERNAME }}"
on the old form, and piped the username instead of the token into
--password-stdin.

The second defect is why this surfaced as a terminal error: an empty value
collapsed into a missing argument instead of failing. With an empty
username, "-u" swallowed the following "--password-stdin", helm stopped
reading the password from stdin, prompted interactively and died with
"inappropriate ioctl for device".

All four values now come from steps.<id>.outputs, are mapped into each
step's own env block and used as quoted shell variables guarded with ":?".
An empty or unset value aborts the job naming the op:// path to fix,
quoting keeps it from shifting arguments, and the token no longer appears
on the command line.

jklein cdb66a32f4 Per-app ingress and service, media subPaths
Three review changes to the freesailarr chart.

Ingress: the chart no longer derives hosts as <app>.<ingress.domain> from one
Ingress object. The global ingress.domain is gone; every app carries its own
<app>.ingress.host and renders its own Ingress <release>-<chart>-<app>-ingress
with its own TLS secret tls-<release>-<chart>-<app>-ingress. The hosts are
therefore independent and may live in unrelated domains. The host is required,
but the required() call sits inside the loop over the *enabled* app ingresses,
so switching an app's ingress off must not make the chart demand a host for it.
clusterIssuer, className and annotations stay global defaults and are
overridable per app; an explicitly set per-app value wins (nil check instead of
"default", so an empty override is honoured).

Media: media.<category>.subPath mounts a sub-directory of the claim instead of
its root, default null (claim root = previous behaviour). The same
existingClaim may back all three categories with different subPaths. That is
the point rather than cosmetics: Radarr and Sonarr import by moving, and a move
within one filesystem can be a hardlink instead of a copy - across volume
boundaries every import duplicates the file.

Services: the collective Service with named ports is replaced by one ClusterIP
Service <release>-<chart>-<app>-service per enabled app that listens on a port,
flaresolverr included; recyclarr serves no port in daemon mode and gets none.
Each ingress points at its own app's service. All containers share gluetun's
network namespace, so the services differ only in their port - they provide
stable per-app DNS names, not network separation. The StatefulSet's governing
serviceName no longer names a removed object.

jklein 914c2d0205 Add freesailarr chart: gluetun-tunneled media automation stack
Single-pod StatefulSet running gluetun (appVersion 3.41.1) as Wireguard
VPN gateway with qbittorrent, prowlarr, flaresolverr, radarr, recyclarr,
sonarr, seerr and bazarr sharing its network namespace. Config volumes
via volumeClaimTemplates, media libraries as existing claims, per-app
enable/ingress toggles, computed FIREWALL_INPUT_PORTS, hardened
security contexts with documented per-image deviations. Wires up
publish workflow, change-app-version choice, install-test exclusion
and README overview.

jklein 0d62c0d6ce renovate: name the nginx alpine check in #84 accurately
The rationale called the alpine switch a proposal from the issue text.
A later comment on #84 commissions it as a check with a defined scope
(nginx.conf compatibility, port 8080, uid 101, /tmp redirection) to be
done alongside the seccompProfile PR for this chart. The outcome is open,
the check is not - the constraint has to survive either way.

jklein 2d03ba8a7c renovate: let the nginx constraint survive a variant tag
The anchored form rejected any tag with a suffix. Docker versioning only
offers candidates carrying the current tag's suffix, so the day the
delegation sidecar moves to a slimmer base image (#84, still open) every
candidate would fail the filter and nginx would stop receiving updates -
without an error, a warning, or a red dashboard.

Verified against currentValue 1.28.0-alpine: anchored form returns
"updates": [] and "warnings": [], the suffix-tolerant form proposes
1.30.4-alpine and still refuses the newer 1.31.x mainline.

jklein 0908785b10 renovate: keep the delegation nginx on stable branches
nginx numbers its release branches by minor: even is stable, odd is
mainline. PR #139 proposed 1.30.4 -> 1.31.4, which would have moved the
Synapse delegation sidecar onto mainline without that ever being a
decision. allowedVersions now permits even minors only; patch updates
inside the stable branch still come through and still automerge.

jklein 2e0e37d838 renovate: automerge minor updates, make the install-test blocking
The two open Renovate PRs (#138 alpine 3.22 -> 3.24, #139 nginx 1.30.4 ->
1.31.4) never automerged because both are minor updates while the rule
only covered patch and digest. Sidecar images barely move in patch steps,
so patch-only would practically never fire.

Automerging a chart update publishes it, so the install-test can no
longer report failures without blocking: continue-on-error is gone and
issue #22's stabilization phase ends here. Majors stay manual.

jklein 6b25d082a7 renovate: chart-aware config with an automatic version bump
Renovate only ever rewrites appVersion or an image tag, so every PR it
opened against a chart directory failed the build-chart version check
(#138, #139). ci/renovate-bump-chart.sh recomputes
version: <semver>+up<appVersion> as a postUpgradeTasks hook: chart major
when the app major moves, chart patch otherwise.

Each chart renders its main image as <repo>:{{ .Chart.AppVersion }}, so
repository and version live in different files and Renovate cannot join
them. The mapping is one customManager per chart in renovate.json5,
deliberately not a comment inside each Chart.yaml - that would touch all
20 chart directories and force 20 publishes for a comment change.

Patch and digest updates automerge after a 3-day minimumReleaseAge once
the pipeline is green; majors arrive one line at a time to match the
stepwise app-major procedure. ci/** stays excluded: the install-test
fixtures pin throwaway infrastructure to major lines on purpose.

jklein 3fa67d55ef rss-bridge: new chart
Takes over the four loose manifests in cluster-config/rss-bridge/ as a
proper chart, on the current template-chart standard: strict values
schema, null-safe helpers, computed limits, replicas/scaleDown,
checksum/config, NOTES.txt.

Two things deviate from the repo standard on purpose:

- The Ingress models host AND TLS secret name per entry instead of the
  single conventional tls-<release>-<chart>-ingress. The installation
this replaces has grown three separate certificates, one per host.
Renaming them would make cert-manager issue three new ones and leave
each host unreachable until it did - a self-inflicted outage on a
deployment that has been up for over a year. Entries sharing a secret
name are grouped into one tls entry, and omitting the name falls back
to the convention, so consolidating later is a values change.

- Requests and limits are decoupled. The old manifest requested 2Gi of
ephemeral storage, identical to its limit, reserving two gigabytes for
a workload measured at 2.2 MB after fetching all five whitelisted
bridges. The request drops to 64Mi; the limit stays at 2Gi.

Hardening was verified rather than assumed. The image ships no USER and
runs as root by default, but runs fully hardened once its writable paths
are provided: uid/gid 33, readOnlyRootFilesystem, all capabilities
dropped, seccompProfile RuntimeDefault. The writable paths were found by
running the image with a writable rootfs, exercising every bridge and
reading its diff layer - /app/cache, /run, /run/php, /var/lib/nginx.
/tmp did not show up that way, because PHP's opcache creates its lock
file there and unlinks it immediately; it only surfaced when the
hardened container died at startup. Stopping at the first writable path
would have shipped a chart that cannot start.

Probes use the app's own /?action=health, which renders fixed JSON
without touching the cache or any remote site, so neither a scraped site
going down nor an unwritable cache can restart the pod.

jklein b218f64eac template-chart + README: values.schema.json, gate and null-safe helpers
Closes out the schema programme (#68) by moving what the 18 charts taught
into the reference implementation and the binding guidelines.

template-chart:
- values.schema.json as the reference schema: additionalProperties false
on every chart-owned level, pod-spec passthrough left open, and the
reasoning inline in the descriptions so a copy carries it along.
- defaultedDict and subBlock plus the per-block fallbacks for both
security contexts, the three probes and resources, wired into both the
  Deployment and the StatefulSet.
- the reference itself violated guideline 1: its env block reads
ingress.domain, so with the Ingress gated off it rendered an empty
value. That read is now required(), and the comment says why - the
template is what people copy, so it has to teach the guard, not the
  hole.

README, new section "Values that must not lie" with the five rules:
1. a value read outside its obvious template needs its own guard
   (matrix-synapse published '{"m.server": ":443"}' to federation without
it, rendering cleanly and reporting healthy)
2. probes, contexts and resources through the null-safe helper, never
behind an "if" - a guard removes the probe instead of showing a null
3. no liveness on an external dependency where a dependency-free path
exists, otherwise document why on the helper
4. a fallback reproduces THIS chart's defaults, not the repo standard -
calibre's readOnlyRootFilesystem: false is what keeps the runtime uid
at 1000 instead of 911 and existing volume data readable
5. a probe default carries its context - port name, Host header, exec
command - or the probe vanishes (teamspeak) or gets 403 (patchmon)

Plus the two mechanics that are easiest to lose: null reaches schema
validation only for keys WITHOUT a chart default (which is why the helper
and the ["object","null"] types each cover a case the other cannot), and
schemas must be validated against real bundle values - that step caught a
draft of mine that would have broken three live paperless releases.

CLAUDE.md: the new-chart checklist now names the schema and the
adaptation step, since the copied file is chart-specific and wrong until
it is adapted.

freesailarr is not covered: it is not on main yet (#59).

jklein 55f5aefdbe homeassistant: cover the secret reference, document the content gap
Home Assistant reads configuration.yaml, http-config.yaml and
recorder-config.yaml from a 1Password-backed Secret, mounted with subPath.
Two different gaps hide behind that, and only one of them can be closed.

Repointing secrets.configSecretRef at a different vault item used to leave the
running pod on the old configuration. That is now covered: the pod template
carries checksum/secret-ref over the rendered OnePasswordItem. The annotation
is named apart from checksum/config on purpose - it only promises that the
config source changed, not the config itself - matching the pattern
minecraft-server introduced.

Changing the CONTENT of the item in the vault still does not restart anything,
and cannot: Helm never sees the content, so there is nothing to hash. The
operator's own auto-restart annotation is no way out either - onepassword-
operator 1.12.0 enumerates exactly one workload type in its secret-update
handler (appsv1.DeploymentList) and this workload is a StatefulSet, so the
annotation would be a silent no-op advertising a guarantee it cannot keep. It
is deliberately not set. values.yaml states the limitation and the manual
rollout restart it requires; the README guideline records the operator finding,
the annotation precedence trap, and the checksum/secret-ref pattern so neither
is rediscovered the hard way.

Major bump: runtime behavior changes - changing the secret reference now costs
a restart. For this release the effect is preventive, since it currently runs
at zero replicas via scaleDown.
2026-08-23 19:20:16 +02:00
jklein 1bca98b9ef Add checksum/config annotation to template-chart and make it binding
A changed ConfigMap did not restart any pod in this repo: no chart carries
a checksum/config annotation, so the pod template stays identical and the
running container keeps its old config. With subPath mounts (the usual form
here) the kubelet never refreshes the file either, so the change is silently
ineffective - see #82, where this caused a real outage while every bundle was
green and the pod Ready.

template-chart is the reference implementation, so it gets the annotation on
both pod templates (Deployment and StatefulSet), and the README style guide
gets a new binding section 9 covering the rule, the reason, and the limit for
1Password-backed Secrets.

Major bump: runtime behavior changes - a config change now costs a restart.

jklein 4874e5db1f Pin minecraft-server to dated image tags and fix the whitelist switch (2.0.0+up2026.8.2.java8)
Stage 3 of the Fleet migration. Two changes, both breaking, hence the major
bump from 1.0.0 to 2.0.0.

Dated image tags: appVersion moves from the rolling line tag "java8" to the
immutable upstream release tag "2026.8.2-java8". The rolling tags are rebuilt
continuously, so a pod restart could pull a different image than the previous
start without that being recorded anywhere. 2026.8.2 is the newest upstream
release (published 2026-08-23) and exists for all three Java lines.

Whitelist semantics: the chart now wires ENABLE_WHITELIST (and ENFORCE_WHITELIST)
in both positions, so minecraft.whitelist.enabled: false actually switches the
whitelist off. Previously the chart only emitted whitelist variables while
enabled was true and had no way to express "off" - and because server.properties
lives on the PVC, a release that had once written white-list=true kept it
forever. players stays guarded by enabled, since a non-empty WHITELIST enables
the whitelist in the image regardless of ENABLE_WHITELIST.

The default flips from enabled: true to enabled: false. Under the corrected
semantics the old default (enabled with an empty player list) would mean a
server nobody can join; false matches both the image and vanilla Minecraft.

jklein 227bcebeb6 Bring minecraft-server up to the chart style guidelines (1.0.0+upjava8)
Stage 2 of the Fleet migration for minecraft-server. Major bump: runtime
behaviour changes (probes, hardening) and the values interface breaks
(resource renames, strict schema).

Two real bugs first:
- The container declared port 35565 while the Service targeted 25565. It
only worked because targetPort was numeric. Both are now server.port
(25565) and the Service targets the named port.
- The download-serverpack init container was guarded by the map
.Values.curseforgeServerpack instead of .enabled, so it rendered for
every release and silently no-opped on an empty wget URL.

Conventions:
- Resources renamed to <release>-<chart>-<kind>, templates to
<app>.<kind>.yaml. The PVC deliberately keeps its historical name -
renaming it would provision a new, empty volume and orphan the worlds.
- Probes (liveness/readiness/startup) via the image's own mc-health, so
Ready means the server answers a server-list ping. Startup budget 20 min.
- Hardened, values-configurable security contexts: non-root uid 1000,
read-only root filesystem with an emptyDir at /tmp, all caps dropped.
- Resources from values with the limitFactor helper; an unset memory
request is derived from the JVM heap so the two cannot drift apart.
- Additive env block rendered through tpl, pinned init image, storage
class as a value, RCON wiring only when actually enabled.
- curseforge/ftb/curseforgeServerpack are now mutually exclusive.
- minecraft.version is pinned to the Java line instead of LATEST.
- The mc-router auto-discovery annotation is gone; the service type it
implicitly switched is now the explicit value server.service.type.

Schema pilot (#68): values.schema.json with additionalProperties false on
every chart-owned level, rejecting all three known dead keys.

jklein a68192e5fb Import minecraft-server chart for Fleet migration stage 1 (java8 line)
Imports the chart from cluster-config functionally unchanged, wires it into
the publish/validate/install-test pipelines and publishes it as the first of
three Java lines (0.4.0+upjava8).

The only deviation from the source chart is the chart-global scaleDown flag
plus a server.replicas value, following the satisfactory pattern: two of the
three servers stand at 0 replicas in the cluster, which the chart could not
express, and Fleet would otherwise start them on reconcile. The default
(scaleDown: false) still renders replicas: 1, so the rendering of the running
server is unchanged - verified byte-identical against the three real values
files for all three Java lines.

Known deficiencies (hardening, probes, naming scheme, hardcoded values,
missing icon, the misleading mc-router auto-discovery annotations) are left
untouched on purpose and are scheduled for stage 2.

jklein c20ad389f2 Minecraft-router chart: naming scheme, hardening, probes, values interface
Stage 2 of the Fleet migration for minecraft-router: bring the chart up to the
repo style guidelines. Chart 0.1.1+up1.25.1 -> 1.0.0+up1.25.1 (major: resource
renames, mappings becomes required, probes and security hardening change the
runtime behavior; appVersion unchanged).

- Resources renamed to {{ .Release.Name }}-{{ .Chart.Name }}-<kind>, templates
to <chart>.<kind>.yaml; the deployment label now matches its own selector.
- mappings is required and must not be empty (the old default rendered
"<nil>": "<nil>:25565"); every entry needs domain and internalUrl.
- Ports come from values: server.port (router listen port, also passed as
--port), server.backendPort (default backend port, overridable per mapping),
server.apiPort (--api-binding, used by the probes). Defaults stay 25565 /
  25565 / 8080, server.outwardPort keeps its 25565 default and comment.
- _helpers.tpl added (resources/limitFactor and replicas/scaleDown helpers),
resources come from values, no CPU limit.
- replicas value plus the chart-global scaleDown flag.
- Additive env block rendered through tpl (value / secretKeyRef /
  configMapKeyRef).
- Values-configurable securityContext.pod / .container with hardened defaults:
non-root uid/gid 10000, readOnlyRootFilesystem, no privilege escalation, all
  capabilities dropped.
- Liveness, readiness and startup probes on the mc-router API: GET /routes with
an "Accept: application/json" header (the API router matches on that header
  and answers 404 without it).
- icon added to Chart.yaml.
- CI fixture supplies mappings; README chart table entry updated.
